Challenges:

  • The soil was previously improved via DSM Columns but was still failing.  One challenge was engineering an entirely new Foundation System (from the piling to the pile caps) while the DSM columns remained in place.
  • Because the tank was not to be replaced, Foundation subcontracted the work to move the tank on jacks while the foundation work was to be completed.
  • Due to proximity to the adjacent tank, access and installation created conflicts.

The Solution:

  • Foundation chose to use H Piles as it could be driven through existing foundations.
  • Equipment: Foundation successfully used custom equipment to install every pile even in limited access conditions.
  • Foundation’s Engineering team successfully designed the type of piling, accounting for varying sloping soil conditions, while also designing the anchorage system to meet the existing tank pattern and layout.
